Our skin is made of several layers which are held together with an advanced membrane (dermo-epidermal junction) that consists of different types of collagens.
Up until the age of 25 our skin produces optimal levels of collagen. Thereafter we lose about 1% of collagen per year. As time goes on, the harder it is for the dermo-epidermal junction (DEJ) to hold the skin's structure together. At the same time, the new production of collagen also decreases. Eventually the skin loses its volume and elasticity as collagen leves drop and the DEJ loses its structure which leads to sagging, wrinkled skin.
Biologique Recherche has researched how different collagens play a role in the natural ageing process of the skin. Based on this new knowledge, Serum Collagéne Originel was created with a patented collagen called Type-O Collagen©. This unique collagen speeds up the skin's own production of collagen it an opportunity to regain a plump and tight appearance as dermo-epidermal junction regains strength.
In-vivo testing showed that the skin's natural production of collagen type 7 and 4 increased and the structure of the DEJ improved after twice daily applications of Collagène Originel for 56 days.
Collagen is a member of a family of structural proteins whose main function is to provide mechanical resistance to stretching, while keeping body tissues supple and firm. It is also involved in other essential biological processes such as cell adhesion and migration.
There are 28 different types of collagen with their own biological functions found in the human body. However, all these collagen types have the same structural foundation: their chain of amino acids is made up of a repetition of the same pattern consisting of glycine and two other variable amino acids.
The repetition of this amino acid pattern forms a peptide chain of more than 1000 amino acids, called the α chain. Several α chains can combine with each other to form a triple helical structure. This combination of three α chains can occur in different ways so that each collagen type has its own structure.
The natural ageing process has dramatic effect on the collagen fiber network. Also, prolonged exposure to UV rays can damage collagen structure.
Collagen is much less dense in mature skin and is folded and disorganized, taking on a twisted and dysfunctional shape. Skin is more fragile and becomes thinner and more wrinkled. After damage, collagen biosynthesis remains too low to allow mature skin to repair itself and replace the collagen that was lost.
Thus, the best ways to maintain a youthful, vital and healthy appearance are to promote and protect collagen synthesis.
The DEJ is the interface between the dermis and the epidermis, which allows it to perform a set of fundamental biological functions such as:
- Providing mechanical support for epidermis adhesion to the dermis
- Controlling metabolic exchanges between the two skin layers, in particular by regulating basal membrane permeability
- Determining the polarity of basal keratinocytes, the spatial organisation of keratinocytes and thus the structure of the epidermis. During epidermal stratification, the proliferating keratinocytes remain attached to the basement membrane and the generated daughter cells migrate outward into the upper layers of the epidermis
- Providing migratory support for keratinocytes during inflammatory processes or during reepithelialization as wounds heal
- Forming a reservoir of growth factors
During skin ageing, the DEJ’s initial wavelike surface tends to flatten. The dermal papillae that create indentations in the DEJ decrease with age. This leads to a decrease in the exchange area and the anchoring area between the epidermis and dermis. The DEJ’s mechanical resistance decreases, resulting in a loss of firmness, sagging facial contours and wrinkles. Healing and tissue regeneration processes are also impaired.
Biologique Recherche’s Research & Development department has found the purest collagen in a primitive planktonic organism that hasn’t evolved in more than 600 million years. It is so ancient that it is the historical strain of all collagen types, the original base in its raw state, the mother of all collagen.
With an exclusive partner specialized in marine biotechnology for the medical sector, Biologique Recherche has developed a unique patented active ingredient called Type-0 Collagen©. It stimulates production of collagen VII at the gene and protein levels, promoting the interactions between the epidermis and dermis that decrease with age.
